Epic loses bid to make Apple change its App Store payment rules right now
The Supreme Court rejected a request to immediately enforce an on-hold injunction.
Epic Games has been REJECTED by the Supreme Court so can’t take its case against Apple any further
The US Supreme Court let Apple Inc. keep its App Store payment rules in place for the time being, rejecting an Epic Games Inc. request that would have let developers start directing iPhone users to lower-priced alternatives online.
As per judgement Apple can keep 15-30% App Store fee and block payments outside App Store
Back in April, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled against Apple, stating it violated California's competition laws by restricting apps from directing users to external payment solutions.
Developers like Epic Games could have steered users towards non-Apple payment methods, sidestepping the hefty 30% tax that Apple levies on in-app payments.
Kagan’s rejection of Epic means Apple will get a reprieve from the 9th Circuit ruling, though perhaps only a temporary one. The appeals court put its decision on hold to give Apple time to file a Supreme Court appeal later this year, but the ruling will kick in if the justices refuse to hear the case.
The dispute could affect billions of dollars in revenue for Apple, which charges developers a commission of as much as 30% for digital goods and services sold through its App Store.
